Wb 18 Whitfield b. 1694and  Hugh 1798 of Culcavey and Catherine

Researcher:  Kat

This tree centres around Hugh Titterington, son of Whitfield 1756,  who was a farmer of Culcavy.   Hugh Titterington married to Catherine, according to Alan C.,  is the first recorded forename of Hugh in the Titterington family worldwide.  Their marriage was witnessed by James Titterington, John and Mary and it seems that their surname was probably Titterington also.  However, other research labels the witnesses as Alexdr. McConnell and John McKnight.  Note that Hugh and Catherine’s grand-daughter Elizabeth, was a child of Whitfield McKnight.

Hugh’s son Whitfield b. 1823, was a young widower, when he married Ann McGuinnes in the townland of Lisadian.    They emigrated to America and raised their family in Tuscola and Saginaw, Michigan.  Maternal family names were used to name some of their children, but this does not seem to apply to the paternal side of the family.  Their son Edward, an intriguing character, married his cousin, Margaret McGuines.   It is worth mentioning that a Sarah Maginnis b. c. 1863 was the wife of Davis Titterington who appears in Dianne’s tree,

In the 1910 census America, Edward takes on the surname MacKay and is living with his sister Margaret, and brother-in-law Henry Clinton Pierce.  He is recorded as a labourer.  I wonder if the use of MacKay is some kind of derivation from the name Mackey that appears in another Titterington tree, Wb10 the family of Whitfield b. 1796 and Jane Beatty?  In the 1920 census he is still living with his sister and brother-in-law but he is now recorded as divorced and in the 1930 census he is living with his sister Margaret who is now widowed.

Edward’s uncle,  Hugh, married Mary Jane Calvert and their graves, together with that of their son Samuel, are all buried in Hillsborough Churchyard next to the grave of Robert Titterington and his wife Maria Heslim.  Kat's family tree descends from this branch.

Hugh's son, James was married to Ellen Crawford.  Ed's family tree descends from James and you can see more about him in chart Wb18 (i).

This tree is concerned with the family of James Titterington, a Labourer and Ellen Crawford.  Two of their children were Hugh and John, aka Johnny. Hugh married Anna Maria Lackey of Kilwarlin, Hillsborough in Belfast, on 26 September, 1887,  Hugh and Anna lived at 75 Craigmore Street but they are listed in 1901 Irish census living on Avoniel Road in East Belfast, with five children.

Records tell us that John emigrated to Lowell, Massachusetts in about 1906 and so did James, Hugh's eldest son. . Hugh and his second son Jeremiah travelled from Londonderry to the United States in 1909, travelling to Lowell, Massachusetts, supposedly to join Hugh's son James.  They are followed by Hugh's wife Anna in 1910 together with all their other children.  The family are listed in 1920 U.S. census as living in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Descendants of this line still survive in America.
