Ringtons Tea

This story relates to a son of Joseph Titterington and Hessie Scandrett, namely William Titterington. See Chart Wa9ii.  Our thanks to Lou Anne for researching this.

His mother, Hessie Scandrett Titterington, is buried at the Kilwarlin Moravian Graveyard, along with his siblings, Richard and Mary Ann.

Ringtons Tea was started in 1907 with an initial investment of £250 by William Titterington.  Titterington’s partner was Samuel Smith.  The name Ringtons was formed by using the latter part of Titterington’s name and the “s” from Smith. The company expanded rapidly and by 1914, Smith had bought out Titterinton’s share of the company.

William James Titterington was born 14 Jun 1871 to Joseph Titterington and Hessie Scandrett in Kilwarlin, Down, Ireland. He married Mary Catherine Convery on 27 Nov 1891 in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland. The 1901 Census shows William  living in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England working as a supervisor for a tea firm.  By 1911, he is living at Newcastle upon Tyne as a retailer of tea.  He and Mary had two sons, William and Francis.  He died 12 Apr 1950.  Mary Catherine died 18 Aug 1954.
