Wb12 The Descendants of James Titterington b. 1712

Wb12 The Family of John Titterington and Elizabeth McClure (cont)

The information that we have about John and Elizabeth is very limited but we are able to name their children and learn a little about the lives that they led.  Most of their sons emigrated: Trevor, John and David to America, William to Scotland and although Richard may have remained in Ireland, many of his children emigrated to Scotland too.  We know that Eliza remained with her family in Ireland.  So, what was the motivating factor for all these emigrants?

Lee and Lesley have given some insight into the lives of their ancestors who were descended from Richard Titterington and Isabella Mathieson.  See Wb12 (i) and Wb12 (iii).

Trevor was born about 1812.  He was a butcher, from Dromatihue, when he married Sarah Catney on 23 January, 1836 at Hillsborough COI.  They had the following children

On the 1st June, 1875, Travers is aged 68, unemployed and is living in Auburn, Cayuga, with Richard, 24, Spinner and Sarah Jane, 25.

In 1880 the family appear to still be living in auburn, but Travers is at 33 Canoga, Thomas is an Overseer and living at 15 Bradley, and Richard, a Spinner, is at 58 Canoga.

Some of the children of Trevor T and Sarah Catney

  1. William John Titterington

William John was the son of Trevor Titterington and Sarah Catney.  He married Ellen Welsh, a widow, on 19 October, 1869 in the Parish Church of Malew, Isle of Man. He was a soldier living at Castletwon Barracks and his father, John Titterington was a Weaver.  There is evidence that he lived in Fordington, Dorset and was an army pensioner in 1901.

2.    Thomas Titterington and Ann Bell

In 1870, Trevor and Sarah’s son Thomas is living in Auburn, Cayuga.  He is a labourer and is with his wife Ann, and children John 11, Robert 9, Eliza 7, Martha 3.  All of the children were born in New York State.  In 1889 Thomas is a worsted spinner, but by 1886 his wife, Nancy has posted the following notice in the local newspaper.

By 1900, Thomas, aged 59, is still living in Auburn.  He has been married to Nancy for 42 years.  He is a Day Labourer and owns his own house.

Thomas died in early 1910 and his widow Nancy is living at 15 Bradley Sreet, Auburn with John, and employee of the Ohio Tool Company and Robert.  Their son John is a shoe operative living at 131 Cottate, with Nellie, and Richard and employee at Nye and Wait, and Mary.

Wb12v The Family of John Titterington and Jane Palmer

We learn from John’s obituary, written in 1904 that he was born on 16th October, 1814 in Hillsborough.  As a young man he learnt the trade of a Carder, but in 1840 he immigrated to America with the Lowery family.  John went to Oriskany, where he worked in the Pleasant Valley Woollen Mill and also did mason work for Newton Dexter and others.  We find him with his family in the 1860 census living in Whitestown, Oriskany, Oneida.  He lived in Oriskany for about 30 years and in 1870 went to Utica.  He was for a short time spinner in the steam woollen mill, then boss carder in the mill, and afterwards he worked at Lowery's knitting mill and in the Globe Woollen Mill.  In 1884 he retired at the age of 70.    He was a staunch Republican in politics.

John and Jane were married in 1840.  She died in 1892.   They had six daughters – Elisebeth, Isabella, Jenna, Hellen aka Ella, Mary Anne and Sarah.  John was survived by four of his daughters- Elisebeth, Isabel and Jenna who lived with them at home and Ella who had married John Knox of Brooklyn.   They had a son named Stanley Knox.

Wb12vi The Family of William Titterington and Eliza Gilligan

William was born in 1817, in Ballykeel-Artifinny.  He was a weaver when he married Elizabeth Gilligan on 30 December, 1837.  They had three children – John and Mary, twins and Elizabeth.

In 1881 William, aged 64, a widower, was living at 42, Millburn Street, Glasgow.

He died on 11th December, 1883 in Denniston, Glasgow.  He was a general labourer and widower of Eliza Gilligan.  The informant for his death was his nephew, John Titterington, Master flesher.  This was probably the son of Richard Titterington and Isabella Mathieson.

Wb12vii The Family of David Titterington and Elizabeth Gibson

David and his wife, Elizabeth Gibson, both born in Ireland, lived their lives in Oriskany, Oneida.  They had a son who it seems, died either at birth or very young.  They had one adopted daughter.

It is David’s will that gives us confirmation regarding his brothers living in America and his sister Eliza, who remained in Ireland.  There is no reference to his brother William.
