The Titteringtons of Northern Ireland
Wa8 (i) Adam son of Richard and Rebecca
Much of the information regarding this branch is formed from the information provided by Adam in his Bible.
From a “Memorial and Biographical History of Dallas County, 1892” we learn the following: -

It claims that Adam was born in Ireland, although we know that he was born in Mimms Lane, Bolton. The article also claims that Adam came to America as a stranger and alone at the age of twelve. This is in conflict with the other article which claimed that he was 18 years, however, it is possible that he arrived in Kentucky when he was aged about 20 years. We know that Adam was aged about 12 years when he was orphaned. The article goes on to claim that he herded hogs in the mountains of Pennsylvania and studied in his spare time to gain a fair education. He drifted into Kentucky, where he lived for many years farming and teaching school. He married Catherine Smith whilst in Kentucky. She was the daughter of a revolutionary soldier who fought in Washington and lived to be over 100 years old. Catherine died in 1837 and Adam Titterington then married her sister, Elizabeth who died in 1868. Adam had 11 children by his first wife, and two by his second wife. He died aged 73 years in 1856.

The following information has been taken from various published documents and the reader will note that there are some discrepancies.

From a document named “A History of Laclede County”published in 1889 we learn that Adam Titterington came to the United States at the age of 18 years. He settled in Kentucky where he married a Miss Smith. He apparently did farm work, taught and was a graduate in medicine, although he never practised medicine. He was interested in politics and was a member of the Church. He died on 17th August, 1856 aged 76.
Adam married twice and he fathered twelve children, all reaching adulthood, and five were still alive in 1889. The eldest child was James, a graduate of Louisville (Kentucky) Medical College. John Q, Daniel (a house carpenter) and Elizabeth (a widow of Mr Merrit).
He had ten children with his first wife, Sarah Smith – six sons and four daughters.
He was a father of two children with his second wife. One child was Caroline who became Mrs Hamilton of Clarksville, Tennessee, and a son who was deceased in 1889. Their mother died in 1864.

Adam Titterington left us a fabulous resource in that he kept a detailed account of all the records pertaining to his family in his Bible. Here is a transcription of those records.

A further Note about Adam
Whilst conducting my research about Adam I came across a couple of interesting documents that relate to the birth of a Negro baby, the child of a slave named Celia. From this I think we can deduce that Adam was a slave owner.

WA 8 PAULINE TITTERINGTON
A birth certificate for Pauline in 1852 shows that her mother was Celia, a black slave and her father or owner was Adam Titterington.
Name Pauline
Birth Date 15 Mar 1852
Birth Place Kentucky, USA
Ethnicity Black
Gender Female
Father Adam Titterington = name of father or owner of child
Mother Celia
Household Members
On the death certificate she is listed as a Male, but I think this was a recording error. The baby died of asthma when she was a few months old.
The death certificate shows that she died in Christian County, Kentucky of Asthma, on the 25th August, 1859. Her Father or owner was Adam Titterington.
