The Kilwarlin Moravian Church

Kilwarlin is a village close to Hillsborough and was a centre for Moravian work in Ireland.  It is recorded that a Moravian Minister, Brother Syms, held a service on 27th May, 1752 for many people in the home of John Titterington in Kilwarlin.  A following developed and a Church was built, the foundations being in place in May 1754.  The church was complete and in use by the following August, founded by the Evangelist, John Cennick.

However, by 1798 services were carried out by Ministers from Gracehill and Ballinderry as it could no longer sustain its own Minister.  By 1834 the buildings were in ruin, but the church was reborn due to the arrival of a new Greek born Minister, Basil Zula.

Basil Patras Zula was a former Warrior who had experienced much slaughter which affected him emotionally. Eventually, life led him to the Moravian Church and he became a Minister of this church.  The curious mound was part of the landscape provided at Zula’s own expense.  It is a representation of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae when the Spartan Army saved Athens from Persian attack.
