Dianne tells us that Robert was her Uncle Bobby.  She says "He died in Belgium, not France and is buried in the Hop Store Cemetery near Poperinghe which isn't too far from Ypres."  The family had always been told that he died almost immediately when he was shot in the head by  a sniper. However, they now suspect that nearly all the bereaved were given a story to assure and comfort them in the belief that their loved one had endured no suffering.  The battle in which he died was when the Germans used mustard gas for the first time.  The British were unprepared and many died a painful death.  Robert died within a day or two of his injuries.
