John's Tree
The Titteringtons of Northern Ireland
This tree holds many of the earliest records researched. However, many of the Irish records are missing, and therefore it is not always possible to base all branches of the trees purely on facts found. Sometimes it is necessary to make suppositions and these are based on probability and very often applying the naming theory.
John Titterington resides in Lurgan and is a Linen Draper. Lurgan is a town about 5 miles from Seagoe and Moira, and about 10 miles from Dromore, 13 miles from Taughblane, 17 miles from Hillsborough, 24 miles from Belfast, and 29 miles from Ballygowan.

In 1679 it is noted that John is a Quaker. In 1679 he is recorded as having paid the sum of 30/- in order to be excused from being a churchwarden. In 1686 he is recorded as a crop tenant in Tannaghmore Townland with his wife Margaret and son Richard. Between the years 1686-1717 he sued several people.

His will, proved in 1718 details his sons as Richard, Thomas, John, James and Joseph and daughters as Isabel and Mary. These are all names that can be found in later trees. It seems he had two wives, Margaret and another whose name is unknown. It is from the second wife, that we believe branches descend - one from John and Dorothy Corren and one from Richard and Rebecca.

We know that the family originated in England. For this reason, the naming pattern used in Ireland need not necessarily apply to the children named in his will of 1718. By following the English tradition John would normally be the first born, but the land transaction of 1685 only shows Richard and the will does not, on this occasion support this. However most of the names recur again in the two families of John and James as well as siblings to John and James who remain in England. Joseph however, is an exception.
The will of 1718 has been followed here. It shows the children of John (1662-1718) as Richard and baptised in England, 1685, James 1687, Thomas 1688, all being probably the sons of John and Margaret. Then John and Joseph are shown as the sons of a wife to John unknown. It has been necessary to give speculative dates to John as the older of the two remaining children as 1709 and Joseph as 1710 otherwise the tree would not be able to progress.
The next link is another Joseph b circa 1735. The choice of this name and date of birth has been arrived at through following through the naming patterns, i.e. Richard married to Rebecca and their first born son of Joseph was born 07 Nov 1777 as shown in Adam's will.
It has been possible to link most other Joseph Titteringtons to this branch but unfortunately not all. An exception is the Joseph born about 1829 who was the son of Hugh and Catherine. The names of Josephine and Joshua appear in the descendant tree of John and Dorothy Corren - but this branch develops from John, the son of Joseph born 1710 and sibling to Joseph b.c. 1735.
It does include the Joseph Titterington born c 1830 and married to Susan Herald, Joseph, son of Esther Scandrett and Joseph son of John and Jane Mathews and all the Josephs descendants of these. There are two other Josephs not yet identified and these are:-
a. Joseph who was born c. 1842 and died in Belfast 1906
b. Joseph who was born about 1834 and died 29 January, 1874 in Lisburn.

Various locations are recorded in this tree namely, Lurgan, Seagoe, Hillsborough, Kilwarlin and Corcreeny.
