Some Stories about Titterington Emmigrants

This story relates to descendants of Richard Titterington and Mary Walsh, shown in Chart Wb15.

Robert Titterington was the son of Robert Titterington and Maria Heslim.  He married Caroline Ruddy on 20 April, 1906 in St Johns CoI, Moira, Co. Down in a double marriage with her sister Maggie who married Thomas Kennedy.

Robert Titterington and Caroline Ruddy had the following children:

  1. Melvin L Titterington was born in 1907 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  He married Margaret Stewart in 1947 in Northumberland, England and died in 1967 in Durham, England

  2. James H Titterington was born on 13 June, 1909 in Newburn, Northumberland.  He died in 1987 in St Austell, Cornwall, England.

Caroline was the first of James and Emily Ruddy's family to emigrate to Pittsburgh, USA with her husband Robert Titterington. They arrived in New York on 4 July 1906 less than 3 months after their wedding in St Johns C of I, Moira, Co Down.  Caroline and Robert sailed from Londonderry on the SS Astoria on 23 June 1906, and the passenger list indicated that their intended destination was Dixmont, Pennsylvania where they had planned to join their brother in law William John Higgins, Jane Eliza's husband.

Unlike her other 4 siblings who emigrated to the USA, Caroline and her family only stayed for a couple of years before returning to the UK and settling in Northumberland in the north of England.  Consequently, her first son Melvin L Titterington was born in the USA but her second son James H Titterington was born in the UK.

Their address in the England and Wales Census 1911 was Newburn, Northumberland, England. Caroline's husband Robert's occupation was recorded as coal miner.
