Wb12 The Family and Descendants of Richard Titterington and Mary Morrow
Richard Titterington b. 1778

Richard was born in 1778 and it is believed that he was the Grandfather of Richard, b 1820 who was married to Betty Anne McCorry. Alan Cookson suggests a speculative Robert born c 1899 who might have been son of Richard b. 1778 and father to Richard b. 1820. It is through him that Nicole's line descends.

Richard Titteringtons and Betty (aka Eliza Ann) McCorry are at the head of this tree. Richard of Ballyknock was a farmer and the family was based in Ballyknock.
In his will he left his main assets to his son Thomas, who was to pay an annual sum to Elizabreh Ann (aka Betty), Richard's widow. Bequests were also made to his daughters Eliza Ann, Catherine, Mary and Jane (aka Margaret Jane), as well as his other son, Richard who was living in Scotland. His expectation was that his widow should live with their son Thomas, but he also made allowance for the possibility that she might not live in harmony with him!

Margaret Jane married James Craig, son of Thomas Craig and Mary Walker b. 1804. Margaret and James's son, James Craig (b. 1884) married Margaret Greer.
Catherine married Isaac Lee and Eliza Anne, aged about 40 years, married James Briggs. The marriage certificate for Eliza and James Briggs, tells us that they were married in St John's Church, Moira. Their witnesses were Mary Gibson - presumably Eliza's sister, and Ed Titterington. I believe this Ed Titterington was Edward Titterington born 1828. This would suggest to me that Edward was a relative to Eliza Ann, quite likely her uncle. When comparing my DNA results on my paternal side, various matches seem to lean towards this area although I have not yet found any definitive matches, but I do feel strongly that it is quite likely that Richard Titterington, born 1820 was quite possibly an older brother to Edward Titterington. This would in turn suggest that Richard's parents were John Titterington and Mary Wolfendon. This would seem to me to be a better fit than a 'speculative' Robert.
In the 1901 census Eliza Ann (aka Betty) is living with her daughter Eliza Ann Briggs and her husband James Briggs. This is interesting, because in his will Richard, dod 1899, stated that she should live with their son Thomas. However, he did make the proviso that if this did not work out, that Thomas should pay her an annual income. In his will, Richard appoints Robert Stanfield of Corcreeny and Andrew Stanfield of Toughblane as two of his three executors. (See Chart Wa6 for more information on Robert Stanfield)

However, Mary married James Gibson, Thomas married Elizabeth Ann Gibson and Richard married Agnes Gibson. The Gibsons may not all be of the same immediate family. Research indicates that the father of James Gibson is George and the father of Agnes Gibson is John. Richard's son Richard, and his wife Agnes Gibson migrate to Scotland and later, post the death of Agnes, some move to Canada.

Cherry Valley Farm features in this tree - see Eliza Ann and her daughter Elizabeth Anne Briggs - this ties in with anecdotal information from William T. William says that Elizabeth Ann Titterington b. mid 1800s, lived on a small farm near Cherry Valley and she married a Mr Briggs. A nephew came from Scotland, perhaps when Mr Briggs died. He was known as wee Robert. (He may well have been Robert b. 1884 and son of Richard and Agnes.) When she died, she left the farm to St John's church and wee Robert had to leave. The church then sold it and it was bought by John Richard Titterington, Wiliam's Grandfather – see Chart Wb15.
