RECORDS ABOUT LANDOWNERS

A Freeholder either owned his land outright or was a leaseholder, in which case it could be held in more than one name - such as his sons, or wife.

A Freeholder had the entitlement to vote at elections providing the freehold had a value of at least 40 shillings.  This applied to Protestants between 1727 and 1793.  Between 1793 and 1829 this applied to both Protestants and Catholics but in 1829 the financial value requirement was raised to £10.  This meant that the 40 shilling holders were now, no longer able to vote.

The Griffiths Valuation was a survey of Ireland made between 1848 and 1864. This was a period shortly after the Irish Famine.  It is helpful to us in our Titterington research because it lists almost every Head of Household by County.

If you cannot find your Ancestor listed as a Householder, this may be because the value of the house was less than £10 depending on the date the valuation was taken i.e. after 1836.

The Tithe Applotment Books and Cancelled Land Books can also be helpful to researchers.
