Wb3 James b. 1664

This tree is headed by John T 1640-1706 and his son James b. 1664. It is believed that James had six sons, James, Thomas, John, Henry, Trevor and Whitfield.  Research is particularly difficult during this period of History, and concrete evidence is often unavailable.  Links have sometimes been made, based on limited facts available, plausibility and the naming patterns often used at this time.  This is particularly so regarding the placement of Whitfield b. 1723 of Culcavy.  His age is a guesstimate and there is no actual proof that he was actually the son and father as shown.

It is the will of the son James, b.c 1690 that provides evidence for his sons, siblings and wife.  This James of Dromore, made his will on 1stAugust, 1750 and it was proved on 22ndNovember, 1750.  From it we learn that James was from Ballyknock, in Moira Parish and that he had a wife Sarah, and sons John and James.  His brothers Trevor and Whitfield were also mentioned.  The Executor was James Titterington of Lurganville and the witnesses were James Titterington, James Moore and Henry Megarry.

James's son Trevor b. 1692 is responsible for the issue of several branches from whom several of our Researchers are descended.  Whitfield b. 1694 is responsible for two branches.

When tracing many of the descendants in this tree, there are two important ancestors.  Trevor b. 1737 who was married to Mary Davis and Richard b. 1740 who was married to Mary.  They were cousins, their grandfather being Trevor b. 1692.

However, we know of at least one descendant line from James c 1690 - c 1750, who was Trevor's b. 1692, older brother.

Wb3 (i) James b. 1711

This branch focuses on one of James's (b. 1664) grandsons - namely, James b.c. 1711 - see chart Wb3.  James born 1711, was a weaver, joined the Moravians in 1755 and died on 20th November, 1768.  He was buried in Kilwarlin.  However, his will was not proved until 7th November, 1772 in Ballinderry.

The first mention of Kilwarlin is contained in the following extract "May 27th 1752" Br Syms went after preaching at Blaneys Bush to the County Down, and preached at the house of James Titterington (a nice man) residing at Kilwarlin

It was his son, James, born in 1735 that became the first Moravian Minister of Titterington descent.

James b. 1735

He was a Minister of Dukinfield c1780 - 1783, and Leominster in 1788.  From here we find the link to the main body of Moravian Titteringtons.

It is believed that the James born 1735 was 'away' when mentioned in his father's will which was proved in 1772.  He was a Moravian Minister of Dukinfield,  c. 1780-1783.  He died in Leominster in 1788 on 24th August, 1789.

James, Clerk of Droysdon and Sarah Holroyd  married in Manchester Cathedral  on the 26th March, 1788.  Their son, James was born in Leominster in 1789 and died in 1796.    I must challenge this, by asking the question “Would one name two sons, living at the same time, with the same name?”  James born 1756 (or 1765) died in 1837, and James born 1789 died in 1796.

In 1768, when his father James is writing his own will, this James is abroad.  He has left cash and goods behind him in Gracehill.  Glenn suggests that Gracehill may refer to the Moravian settlement of that name just outside Ballymena, County Antrim.

James b. 1756

NB:  Regarding James Titterington b. 1756, records (see Ros Davies) indicate that he was born about 1765, having died on 16 Apr 1837 in Ballykeel-Artifinny, Hillsborough Parish, County Down, Ireland aged 72 years, and was buried on 19 Aug 1837 in Hillsborough Church ofIreland.  I think one must either assume that he was over 80 years when he died, or that he was aged about 9 years when his first child, Margaret was born in 1774.

We have also learnt from records that James was a Freeholder at Ballykeel-Artiffinny, his Landlord  being the Marquis Of Downshire.  This James and his wife are Society Members (Moravians) and lead a continuing line of Jameses also Moravians.  He was recorded as a farmer, in 1837.  James married Ann Shillington on 6th  January, 1788 in Brethren's Chapel, Kilwarlin. Ann was born before 1778 in Gracehill, Parish of Ahogill.

A James Titterington of Ballykeel-Artifinny  made a charity donation in 1836.  This may quite likely have been him.

There are descendants of Rebecca Titterington who was married  to William Ellis, living in America. See chart Wb3 (ii).

Wb3 (iii) The Family of Francis Titterington and Abigail Megarry

Records show that Francis, born 27/12/1881, was the son of James Titterington and Mary.  They had previously had a son also called Francis who had died, aged two, of small pox.  Francis married Abigail Megarry and they had the following children – Elizabeth, Abigale, Margaret, James and John.

Francis was buried on 29th May, 1831 (UHF) and there is a will probated in 1832 for Francis Titterington of Corcreeny.

It seems that Margaret, James and John all emmigrated from Ireland.  There is evidence that shows that their daughter, Margaret married Hector Harper.  A marriage licence between Hector Harper and Margaret Titterington, in Cuyahoga County, Ohio was for the 19th June, 1845.  She died in Orange, Cuyahoga, Ohio in 1903.

Research records the baptism of James, aka Francis, son of Francis Titterington and Abigail Megarry on 10thDecember, 1819 in Hillsborough Parish.  There is also evidence in the records of IGI for the marriage of James Titterington, son of Francis Titterington, in St John's Lisburn, to Eliza Lee, child of John Lee on 7th April 1855.  We are able to deduce from the births of their children that James and Eliza immigrated to St Catherine’s, Niagara, Canada at some time during 1859 to 1860.   James, Eliza and their family left Canada at some time after 1864 and by 1870 they were living in Ohio.

In the 1870 census, James and Eliza are living in Orange, Cuyahoga, Ohio.   He is a Farmer. They were both born in Ireland as were their son John and daughter Mary.  Their children Martha, Alexander and William were born in Canada.  In the 1880 census, Eliza is called Lizzie.  They were still living in Orange, Cuyahoga, Ohio, when James died on 10th July, 1902.  The record for his death states that his father was Frank Titterington, but surprisingly, that his mother was Margaret Titterington.  So, this begs the question – did Francis Titterington have two wives – one named Abigail and the second named Margaret?  Alternatively, did Abigail choose to be called Margaret?  However, James had an older sister.  If his mother, Abigail, died when he was young, it may be that Margaret stepped in and took on the role of ‘Mother’.  After he died, whoever had to record his death may not have known his mother’s name and gave Margaret as a suitable solution.

Their son John was baptised as John James on the 24th  August, 1823 at Hillsborough.   John Titterington, Miller is recorded in the 1851 Census, in Welland Ontario.  By 1861 he is living as a Miller, in St Catherine's, Lincoln, Ontario with his wife Martha Gould and son James.  This town is about 14 miles north of Welland.  Martha was born in Canada.  Their children were James, William, Elizabeth and Mary.

John had cause to place the notice shown below, in the Canada Gazette in 1877.  On 1st August, 1895, aged 73.  John, a Corn Merchant died in St Catharine’s, Lincoln, Niagara, Ontario, Canada.  If one looks closely at the choice of names for the grandchildren of Francis and Abigail, one might assume that these three siblings were very close.
